Born from the revolution, France was a threat to all the Kings and Emperors of Europe. They continually sought to destroy the rulers of France and return it to King Louis because they were concerned the revolution would spread to their own country.
The coalition formed to remove France as a threat did not work due to the competing aims of the countries involved.
Napoleon Bonaparte emerged to defeat Austria in Italy; which began a series of conquests throughout Europe.
Napoleon was crowned Emperor in 1804. It was his attempt to legitimise his reign.
